On the ship she meets a young man, Sheftu, who mistakes her for a runaway slave and threatens her with handing her over to the authorities if she does not become his spy in the palace of the Queen. Mara boards a ship towards the capital, ready to start her job as a spy and earning for her freedom, but fate is not done playing games with her. Mara is to then report on any suspicious activities Thutmose might be doing with his advisors. Her new master tells her that she is to enter the imperial palace as a translator for a new Syrian princess, who was chosen by Hatshepsut as a bride for her half brother Thutmose, in the hopes to keep a tight leash on him. Mara is thrilled at the idea, and eagerly accepts, stating that she would rather die trying to be a spy than having to serve as a slave again. One day, a stranger approaches Mara’s master and buys her from him, whisks her off and tells her that from this moment her life belongs to him, and that she is to become a spy in the service of the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut, promising her that if she does her job well she will be freed from her status as a slave and given as much gold and she wants. Mara is a beautiful young Egyptian slave who has spend years suffering at the hands of her masters. She began to do so, but soon the urgent calling of a woman in the Delta recalled to her mind her age-old duties, and she forgot Thebes as she ushered another new Egyptian into the world.” These scurrying mortals had amused her, but now she would spend what remained of the hours of darkness admiring her beauty in the mirror of the Nile. I didn’t expect however, that it would become one of all time favourite novels. Seeing as I love historical fiction books, I expected to love this book. It has been a long time since I have read a book that left me so satisfied and so full of warmth. But just when Mara is ready to offer Sheftu her help and her heart, her duplicity is discovered, and a battle ensues in which both Mara’s life and the fate of Egypt are at stake.” In order to gain it, she finds herself playing the dangerous role of double spy for two arch enemies, each of whom supports a contender for the throne of Egypt.Īgainst her will, Mara finds herself falling in love wit one of her masters, the noble Sheftu, and she starts to believe in his plans of restoring Thutmose III to the throne.
